This year’s NSW Twitchathon will go ahead as usual organised by Tom and Elisabeth Karplus with lots of help from the previous organisers. Because Sydney people cannot travel to the regions until November 1, 2021, teams have the option to do their Twitchathons on the weekends of October 30/31, November 6/7 or November 13/14. Currently we have 14 teams registered. If you would like to enter a team, please contact Elisabeth on emhodson@exemail.com.au.

The most important part of the Twitchathon is raising money for a research or conservation project. This year we are raising money for Nicolas Carlile’s project to assess the breeding success of Gould’s Petrels on Montague Island off Narooma. Gould’s Petrel is Australia’s rarest endemic seabird. The breeding population is centred on islands off Port Stephens with Cabbage Tree Island (CTI pop: 800-1000 pairs) and Boondelbah Island (pop: 35-40 pairs). In 2012 the species was found to be breeding on Montague Island. Monies raised by the 2021 Twitchathon will be used to assess the breeding success of this species on Montague Island. For more information on the project to be funded, please go to http://www.twitch24nsw.org/?page_id=2
