Conservation

BIRDING NSW has an active Conservation Subcommittee alert to conservation issues. The committee keeps club members informed and encourages opposition to projects that threaten bird habitat.

Birding NSW:

  • Participates in the Bird Interest Group network (BIGnet) – a network of the main birding groups in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory.
  • Is represented on the Capertee Valley Regent Honeyeater Recovery Group – the aim is conservation of one of the key breeding areas of the Regent Honeyeater in the Capertee Valley. The group organises and encourages participation in tree planting and surveys over weekends in May and August each year.
  • Adopted a section of the South-western Slopes Important Bird Area (IBA) in the Grenfell area. It is the largest IBA in Australia with more than 2.5 million hectares. It’s home to a number of threatened species including the Vulnerable Superb Parrot. Birding NSW organises twice-yearly bird surveys of the Grenfell section and participation is open to all members.
  • Sponsors science by funding research – the Birding NSW Committee awards grants subject to review.
