Grenfell KBA Surveys

Since 2011, Birding NSW has been running a bird survey twice a year (March and September) around Grenfell, which is in the South-West Slopes KBA. https://birdlife.org.au/programs/key-biodiversity-areas/
These surveys provide the basis for the annual report on the KBA to BirdLife Australia. The target species in the KBA are Superb Parrots, Diamond Firetails, Swift Parrots and Painted Honeyeaters.

Each survey weekend is attended by 20-30 participants, with the majority coming from Sydney, but with several local surveyors and surveyors from Canberra and the Illawarra. Participants are divided into six groups with each group surveying five sites. Each site is surveyed for 20 minutes and all bird species are recorded with their numbers. The 30 survey sites are in state forests, along roadsides and on private properties. Survey data are retained locally for analysis and also sent to BirdLife Australia’s Birdata.

Surveys are generally completed on Saturday mornings. Other weekend activities include dinner together on Friday evenings, a barbecue on a private property on Saturday evening and a birding walk around Company Dam in Grenfell on Sunday morning.
